MIDTOWN Hall of Fame
Las Palmeras
The recent closing of fellow Cuban eatery Kool Korners Grocery and the OTP relocation of Havana Sandwich Shop make hard-to-spot Las Palmeras an even more beloved neighborhood landmark. Mustard and pickles rev the classic Cuban sandwich ($6.95), but longtime fans also love the mojo-marinated rotisserie chicken ($12.95) and masitas de puerco ($12.95), or pork in lemony sauce. 366 Fifth Street, 404-872-0846.
New Classic: MetroFresh
Mitchell Anderson—the actor-turned-cook who gives the term “celebrity chef” a new twist—and his crew whip up a daily-changing spread of soups, sandwiches, and salads. We’re especially drawn to the colorful, perky-flavored salads such as sweet potato and apple with grapefruit vinaigrette or gingery soba noodles ($4.50 each). Keep an eye out for creative dinner specials. 931 Monroe Drive, 404-724-0151, metrofreshatl.com.
Surprise: Green Sprout Vegetarian
File this one under the tastes-way-better-than-it-sounds category: Dishes such as stir-fried Yukon gold potatoes with garlic and preserved greens ($8.50) and dry-fried string beans with spicy fermented tofu ($8.50) exemplify what’s best about Buddhist-style vegetarian Chinese cooking. Kind servers make up for the austere digs. 1529 Piedmont Avenue, 404-874-7373, greensproutga.com.
