Midtown Review: South City Kitchen

Thursday, April 15, 2010

There is a gift to southern cooking and when done well, makes you feel like you are in your grandmother's kitchen. Southern food makes me feel at home and takes me to a place of comfort. So today, after a stressful week, I embarked on South City Kitchen for lunch on Crescent Street. Many places in Atlanta attempt to have the best southern cuisine, so I knew I would have high standards for this restaurant. Snuggled between the big city skyscrapers and the small town essence of Crescent St., South City Kitchen gives this big-city lifestyle a sense of coziness. They have a wonderful patio that sits right along Crescent St. for those beautiful Atlanta days that we all know and love. Of course, I ordered sweet tea to drink which was very refreshing. My mother ordered the vegetable plate which consisted of green beans, field peas, grits and creamy mac and cheese. I decided to go full out and order the southern specialty, Buttermilk Fried Chicken with buttermilk whipped potatoes, green beans, bourbon gravy. I also got a side of macaroni and cheese to try since I creeped on someone elses plate on another table and saw how fabulous it looked. Before our meal came, we were brought some fresh biscuits and cornbread. Both were amazing and light but the cornbread was my favorite. I am not a big cornbread eater, but wow... this cornbread was fluffy, light, and had a great hint of sweetness to it. Our food came soon after and wow was it pretty on the eyes with bright colors of vegetables and the crispy fried chicken. The fried chicken was prepared perfectly with just the right amount of crunchy crisp on the outside and a flawlessly cooked chicken inside where the meat was falling off the bones. I would highly recommend this restaurant to visitors or guests from outside of the city that want to find a restaurant where they can get a taste of Atlanta. Whether it is the location, atmosphere or the impeccable food, South City Kitchen truly has some of the best southern cuisine in the city.
