Midtown Review: Spice Market

Tuesday, February 23, 2010 0

Today for lunch I tried out Spice Market in the W Hotel Midtown. This was my first experience eating lunch or any meal for that matter at a hotel when I wasn't staying in it. I never understood why people would eat at a hotel restaurant when they aren't on vacation or guests of the hotel. You would have to valet your car or park your car in the expensive garage, find your way through a huge hotel to just have lunch, deal with the array of hotel guests that you may run into, and many more reasons I formulated in my head as to why I would never eat a meal at a hotel when I am not staying there. So despite all of these premonitions, I gave Spice Market a try today. Once again, I took my favorite lunch date (my dad) to experience this sure to be adventure with me. We pulled up to the W Hotel and since my dad has one broken foot we did valet. The valet guys were great! When we told them we were just getting lunch, they said don't worry about the valet charge "we will take care of it." I love those words. We walked into the hotel and immediately noticed the large Spice Market sign. Surprisingly, the hotel was not crowded at all. No busy guests to have to weave through. We were pleasantly greeted at Spice Market and had incredible service. The manager Christopher Gunn was wonderful. He explained the menu to us and answered all of our questions! I ordered their Bento Box with the Chicken and Coconut Milk Soup, Market Green Salad with Radishes, Cherry Tomatoes and Sesame Seed Vinaigrette, Chicken Skewers with Lime Dipping Sauce, Vietnamese Chicken Curry, Brown Rice, and Green Tea Icecream. (Yes, ALL of this comes in one Bento Box! Ridiculous right?!) My dad ordered a Bento Box as well but with Lamb Satay with Sweet Soy, Salmon in a Lemongrass Peanut and Noodle Broth with Herb Salad, and Sorbet. Before the meal even comes they bring out these crispy tortilla lookin "chips" that are ADDICTING. It comes with this spicy tomato salsa stuff that is ADDICTING as well. Seriously I can't even count how many refills we got on this before the meal came. Our meal came out (probably after about a 15 minute wait) and looked delicious. To start off with, the Chicken and Coconut Milk Soup. Ok, you know from my previous posts that I am a REALLY picky eater.... so when I saw this on the menu I thought I would taste it to be nice, but it would be disgusting. So I tasted it, and LOVED IT. This soup had some of the most packed flavor in one spoonful that I have ever had!! The salad was interesting in a good way. Very different and once again LOTS of flavor packed into a small dish. The chicken skewers were spicy to me (but then again I think mild wings are spicy) but had so much flavor. And finally, I have never had a chicken curry that I have really liked. The flavor of curry is not one I personally crave, but the chicken curry at Spice Market was delicious and I ate ALL of it. Everything for lunch was PACKED with flavor! Lots and lots of flavor! It was so good! And to top of this perfect lunch, they had sorbet and green tea icecream for dessert served in cute little boxes. I liked the sorbet but my personal favorite was the green tea icecream! Seriously the best green tea icecream I have ever had. This is going to cause me trouble cause now I am going to crave it and want to walk over there for dessert... I wonder if they do green tea icecream to go orders?!? Overall the food at Spice Market surpassed my expectations and changed all my prior ideas on hotel restaurants. I would 100% recommend going to Spice Market for lunch...even when you aren't a hotel guest!

Midtown Event: "Open That Bottle Night"

ATLANTA RESTAURANTS REMOVE CORKAGE FEES
FOR “OPEN THAT BOTTLE NIGHT”
Midtown and Downtown Restaurants Make it Easy to Savor Special Wine with Fine Food

On Saturday, February 27, people across America will be celebrating Open That Bottle Night by gathering with family and friends to uncork that extraordinary bottle of wine that has been saved for special occasions. Since there is no better way to enjoy a good bottle of wine with good food, several local restaurants in Atlanta are offering guests the opportunity to sip, savor and share their special wines over a quality meal by waiving their corkage fees on this evening only.
Nationally acclaimed restaurant Pacci Ristorante is waiving their $35 corkage fee for any wines they do not carry on Open That Bottle Night and is also giving guests the chance to recycle their wine corks and receive wine discounts as a result with their “Cork to Fork” promotion. In partnership with ReCORK America, Pacci is asking patrons to bring in real corks from home and to buy a bottle of wine with their dinner to obtain more corks for reuse. The restaurant will deduct 2 percent off the total bill for every cork brought in up to a maximum of 20% off. This offer is limited to natural cork wine closures only, and does not include plastic or metal closures. Wine cork closures are 100 percent natural, biodegradable and renewable, so this is a great way for Atlantans to embrace more sustainable living practices. Pacci Ristorante is located at 866 West Peachtree Street NW, adjacent to Hotel Palomar in Midtown. For more information about Pacci, call 678-412-2402 or visit http://www.pacciatlanta.com/.

For a more casual experience on Open That Bottle Night, the Midtown location of Marlow’s Tavern, a well-known neighborhood restaurant that takes American tavern fare to the next level, is an excellent place to celebrate. The restaurant never charges corkage fees and is located in Midtown at 950 West Peachtree Street, 404-815-0323. For more information about Marlow’s Tavern, visit http://www.marlowstavern.com/.

Spice Market, located at the W Hotel in Midtown, is waiving their $15 corkage fee on Open That Bottle Night so guests can enjoy Southeast Asian inspired cuisine with their special wine selections. Spice Market is located in the W Hotel Midtown at 188 14th Street, NE. Restaurant guests will receive validated valet parking at a reduced rate of $6 per car daily. Complimentary self parking is also offered in the Colony Square Parking Deck located directly west of the hotel entrance on the corner of 14th St and Juniper Street after 6 p.m. daily. For more information, call 404-724-2550 or visit http://www.spicemarketatlanta.com/.

For exceptional dining in the heart of Atlanta, Ray’s in the City offers diners the freshest seafood, finest cuts of meat, unparalleled service and no corkage fees for guests. The restaurant is located in Downtown Atlanta at 240 Peachtree Street, NW; 404-524-9224. For more information on Ray’s Restaurants, visit http://www.raysrestaurants.com/.

Open That Bottle Night was created by Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher in the year 2000, and it has been celebrated every year since then. For more information and ideas for ways to celebrate, visit http://www.openthatbottlenight.com/.

Midtown Review: PIE 950

Tuesday, February 16, 2010 0

My excitement has been building and building about PIE 950 ever since I heard they were opening in Plaza Midtown. So FINALLY I got a chance to try them for lunch! Let's just say my excitement was at a high level (since pizza is one of my favorite foods) so my expectations were through the roof! I'll just start off by saying that I am so disappointed. I mean it was "alright" but it just could have been sooo good!! The restaurant itself is designed like an Italian Pizzeria and is beautiful! Two stories with spiral staircases bring so much life into this little pizzeria. PIE 950 has some lunch specials that they offer including one slice, pie salad and a drink for $6.99, or you can get two slices and a drink for $6.99, and finally you can choose to get one slice, pie salad, and a gourmet milkshake for $9.95. I myself chose the 2 slices of pepperoni and my favorite lunch date, my dad, ordered a meatball slice with the pie salad. We only waited about 10 minutes until are food came out! The "salad" (I guess that is what you would call it) was hmmm whats the word.... "Interesting" to be nice. Definitely not like any salad I have ever had before. I wouldn't order this salad again though. We each had one bite to try it, both shook our heads, and pushed it away. My pepperoni pizza looked very promising. The slices were all golden with cheese and thick cut, crispy pepperoni on top. It looked like a pretty picture.... just don't turn the pizza over! The bottom was pretty much burnt to crisp! What a tease.... The black "crisp" wasn't complimentary to the pizza at all! It was really hard to enjoy the flavors of the pizza when all you could taste was smoke. I'm hoping these were the only bad slices in the whole restaurant that just happened to land on our plates (yeah right). Other than the smoke pizza, the service was wonderful! Definitely great place to grab lunch if you only have a certain amount of time. We were in and out in 30 minutes (even though the pizza looked as if it had cooked for 2 hours). The menu looks incredible and if you are brave enough, even though not recommended, you can give this place a chance especially if you enjoy the taste of a smoky grill in your mouth.

BAKESHOP Dessert Bar Launches

While at the incredible media luncheon that I was so excited to be invited to, Hannah from Concentrics spoke to me about the new Dessert Bar that Bakeshop is launching. Everyone has those nights where they go to a great dinner with a loved one or close friends. You are having such a great time that you want to continue your amazing night somewhere else. Maybe you are not in the mood to go out to a bar or club, but you definitely do not want to just go home after dinner. Bakeshop's new dessert bar now provides you with an alternative. $20 at Bakeshop on a Saturday night gives you 3 plated desserts with 3 complimentary cordials. They even will allow you to bring your own wine! This idea is genious! What a fun night to share with a loved one or even with a few girlsfriends after a great dinner! You can choose 1 plated dessert from EACH category including: Silky Chocolate, Sweet Fruit, Melt in your Mouth Custard. A la carte option available! Order a dessert from any one category for $5.00. Come to BAKESHOP to enjoy after dinner or pick up a few to go!

HEY, IF YOU WEAR A MASK TO THE MASQUERADE, NO ONE WILL KNOW THAT'S YOU PUTTING AWAY ALL THAT RA SUSHI ON FAT TUESDAY!
Is somebody going to snap a picture of that masked group devouring those Hot Mess rolls (yes, the "It's A Hot Mess" Flickr contest is in full swing) along with a few $5 Hur "RA" canes at RA Sushi's Fat Tuesday Mardi "RA" Masquerade Ball? Costumes and masks make for intriguing photos and might win the wearer a prize when costume judge Baton Bob, Atlanta's own "Ambassador of Mirth," picks the winner of a $100 RA gift certificate and other prize winners. RA has a whole slew of carnivale beverage specials lined up to go with those Hur "RA" canes including $5 TY KU cocktails, $2 hot sake, $3 domestic beer and more. Mardi "RA" starts at 8 p.m. on February 16 and parties on until closing with DJ Krillz's rock and roll, hip hop and Top 40 dance spins.

SAINTS ALIVE! MARDI GRAS IS FLOWING FOR SIX WEEKS DURING MARLOW'S "BAYOU 'N BOURBON" CELEBRATION!
As Fat Tuesday shimmies in on February 16, Marlow's Tavern rolls out "Bayou 'n Bourbon," a six-week-long party on the menu rollicking with Deep South eats and libations that will set your inner Cajun free. Fat Tuesday night hoopla features the new menu, drink specials, a raffle drawing, party favors and a festive night of Bayou music. Take a look at the "Bayou 'n Bourbon" menu specials, and you'll see why Marlow's Executive Chef/Co-Founder John Metz anticipates lots of happy guests. Crescent City inspirations include roast chicken and shrimp gumbo ($6); fiery crawfish fondue served with crispy pita chips ($9); the "N.O. Style" po' boy that piles tempura-battered shrimp and crawfish, sweet slaw, lettuce and tomato on a soft Cuban roll with a douse of smoked chili cream ($10); and the bayou burger that heaps cheddar, crawdads, lettuce, tomato, red onion and house-made Creole mustard atop an andouille sausage and fresh ground beef burger ($10). Pecan-crusted Georgia Mountain trout with dirty rice, fresh spinach and red pepper crawfish cream ($14); deconstructed jambalaya ($13); and the sweet Bourbon Street ribeye, blackened then glazed with Maker's Mark ($25) provide three more entrée options. For dessert, there's honey bourbon bread pudding with vanilla crème brûlée, soaked ciabatta and a splash of Maker's Mark ($6). Marlow's New Orleans-style drinks (and they wish they had these on Bourbon Street) include Marlow's Sazerac, made with Sazerac Rye Whiskey, Obsello absinthe and whiskey barrel-aged bitters ($9); Ramos gin fizz, shaking up Plymouth gin, house-made sour, light cream and orange flower water ($7); the Cajun cosmo of Absolut Mango and Peppar, cranberry, triple sec and fresh lime ($8); and Abita Jockamo ($4), an IPA that tames those spicy dishes.
Marlow's also is looking to fatten the coffers of the Atlanta Community Food Bank (AFCB)! Starting on Fat Tuesday and running throughout the Marlow's "Bayou 'n Bourbon" promotion, you can add a donation for the ACFB to your tab. Every donation of $1 or more earns a bounce-back card of $5 off your next $15 Marlow's Tavern purchase.

:::PACCI RISTORANTE IS FIRST IN GEORGIA TO OFFER WINES FROM SONOMA'S PETERSON WINERY:::
The term "sustainable" has been out there for a while, but are you familiar with "zero manipulation"? Actually, it's not a touchless massage; it's the term for the old world, low-tech, high-touch winemaking philosophy followed by Peterson Winery of Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, California. Pacci Ristorante, already dedicated to sustainable wine practices such as ReCORK America, is thrilled to be Georgia's first restaurant to offer Fred Peterson's sustainably crafted fine wines. Beginning this month, always elegant Pacci will offer three Peterson Winery selections: Peterson's Timber Crest Farms Sauvignon Blanc, Zero Manipulation Rhone-style blend and Il Granaio Sangiovese. Come, savor these wines while dining at Pacci and enjoy the total restaurant experience that has earned Pacci a spot on Esquire magazine's "Best New Restaurants of 2009" list!
Pacci Ristorante: 866 West Peachtree Street, NW, adjacent to the Hotel Palomar; 678-412-2402.

:::HEAT RISES: ALTOREX ROOFTOP LOUNGE REOPENS WITH HEATERS AND TENTS!:::
You can only curl up inside and wait out the cold for so long before your body craves the fresh air, starry nights and the promise that spring will be here soon. AltoRex Rooftop Lounge, located above Pacci Ristorante, is there for you and is reopening part of its Midtown perch on Tuesday, February 2. Heaters and tented ceilings will keep the rooftop cabana portion of AltoRex cozy as guests order items off Pacci's tasty bar menu. Lest things get too heated, be sure to order a specialty cocktail or your favorite wine or beer!

:::TOULOUSE'S STEVE PENLEY WINE DINNER ON FEBRUARY 9 HELPS PAINT A BRIGHTER PICTURE FOR PEOPLE OF HAITI:::
Walk into Toulouse and you can tell immediately you're in a positive place just by looking at the Steve Penley paintings gracing the walls with their bright colors and conversation-inspiring topics. Helping the people of Haiti is a huge topic right now, and Toulouse and artist Steve Penley are getting together to raise money to help Haitians through the ServeHAITI Foundation. On Tuesday, February 9, Toulouse guests can meet Penley, enjoy a five-course dinner with two glasses of wine and help the ServeHAITI Foundation all in one swoop at the restaurant's Steve Penley Wine Dinner. Penley's paintings, posters and his illustrated book will be on view and available for purchase. Photographs of Haiti by Donna Williams, a photographer who has been working with ServeHAITI, will be on display. Penley will autograph books starting at 6:30 p.m., and dinner begins at 7:15 p.m. On the menu: field green salad with red wine vinaigrette; seared scallops served with broccoli and sundried tomatoes in a rosemary-citrus reduction; wild mushroom ravioli atop arugula sprinkled with gorgonzola cheese, cranberries and pistachios drizzled with a white balsamic sauce; beef tenderloin filet with mushroom cream sauce coupled with grilled salmon in a balsamic beurre blanc; and Robert's flourless chocolate cake with chocolate glaze for dessert. $125 per person, including tax and gratuity. The ServeHAITI Foundation will receive a portion of art sale and dinner proceeds. Call 404-351-9533 to make your reservation.
Toulouse: 2293 Peachtree Road, NE; 404-351-9533.

It's Q&A time with the Atlanta-based writer and syndicated advice columnist at Pacci Ristorante's "Queen of Hearts" cocktail lounge party on Thursday, February 11 from 7 - 9 p.m. The Queen of Hearts, who will give a special reading during the evening, ordains that there be no cover charge to enjoy complimentary appetizers, cocktail specials, tarot card readings and a prize-laden card raffle. Pick your cards right and you could win a weekend stay at the Hotel Palomar Atlanta - Midtown, Pacci gift certificates or free cocktail and dinner coupons. :::IF YOU "HEART" VALENTINE'S DAY, WE HAVE SOME HEART-Y IDEAS FOR YOU!:::
Last week, we posted a lovely list of delicious ways to share Valentine's Day or week with your special someone...and some ways for the happily un-attached to have a good time, too. If you missed it or need a refresher course, catch it again on our Web site. We're tossing in a couple more options for you to consider this week.
Everything's rosy at Marlow's Tavern™, where a special Valentine's weekend tasting menu is priced for one ($30) or two ($55) for solo or tandem dining pleasure from February 12 through 14. Start with taste plates of New England-style roast shrimp and corn chowder or the popular Tavern salad before diving into the Surf & Turf platter of grilled filet mignon, tempura lobster tail and shrimp with a crispy potato cake and jumbo asparagus. For a sweet ending, choose chocolate crème brûlée or decadent Napa Valley cheesecake. (Alpharetta at 3719 Old Alabama Road, 770-475-1800; Kennesaw at 745 Chastain Road, NW, 770-425-8777; Midtown at 950 West Peachtree Street, 404-815-0323; Vinings at 2355 Cumberland Parkway, 770-432-2526; Northlake at 4156 LaVista Road, 678-987-1197; and Duluth at 1950 Satellite Boulevard, 770-622-2033.)

:::SPICE MARKET:::
Spice Market's Valentine's weekend menu takes its cues from the lively markets of southeastern Asia. Global romantics and adventurous foodies will love the $65 per person, five-course menu complete with a glass of champagne. The night's five courses include your choice of black pepper shrimp with sun-dried pineapple or tuna tartare with spicy radish, avocado and ginger marinade; mussels steamed with lemongrass, Thai basil, dried chili and coconut juice or charred chili rubbed beef skewer with Thai basil dipping sauce; cod with Malaysian chili sauce and Thai basil served with baby corn and broccoli with lemongrass and chili; char-grilled chicken with kumquat lemongrass dressing and ginger fried rice; and dessert of Thai jewels and fruits with crushed coconut ice or chocolate tart with coffee ice cream. Guests can also order à la carte. And fortunate guests, Spice Market has green tea-, chocolate- and coffee-flavored fortune cookies for you on Valentine's Day. You'll get yours at the end of your meal! Reservations can be made through Open Table or by calling the restaurant at 404-549-5450. (In the W Atlanta Midtown, 188 14th Street, NE; 404-549-5450.)
