RA Sushi Executive Chef Rolls Out New Menu Items

ATLANTA (Jan. 6, 2011 via Atlanta Dish) – Scottsdale-based RA Sushi Bar Restaurant recently introduced updated dinner, sushi and beverage menus, adding a wide variety of new dishes and cocktails to the current selection. RA also revamped its popular Happy Hour and Flying Fish Lounge menus to include a greater selection of sushi, appetizers and tapas items. The new menus will be offered at all 25 RA Sushi locations nationwide, including Atlanta.

For drinks, I recommend the Red Lotus martini (picture below) or the Strawberry Margarita!! Both are incredible!

"To keep the menus fresh and exciting, every year RA Sushi updates its selections to incorporate some of the newest culinary trends and ingredients,” said RA Sushi Executive Chef Tai Obata. “Our most popular dishes have remained on the menu, but we’ve added several new creations, some with a tropical flair.”
Under the “Soups and Salads” category, Obata added the Otoko Salad: choice of grilled chicken or beef tossed in a spicy yuzu dressing with grilled red and green bell peppers, onions and asparagus; served over a bed of mixed greens in a rice wine vinaigrette, topped with watercress and fried ramen noodles (Chicken: $10/Beef $12).

For entrée selections, look to the “Getting Busy” section, which now features Lobster with Garlic Sugar Snap Peas: lobster sautéed with garlic, sugar snap peas and shiitake mushrooms, in an Asian seasoning; served with steamed rice ($17.50). I was able to taste this the other day (note the picture below) and it was AMAZING!

The “What’s New” category features four new sushi rolls, a couple with a tropical influence. Back by popular demand, the Pacific Roll is a spicy mix of albacore tuna, cilantro, jalapeño and cucumber, rolled and topped with fresh avocado and mango salsa; finished with red beet tempura bits and sautéed cashew nuts ($9.50).

The “RA”ckin’ Roll includes kani kama crab and cream cheese rolled in rice and seaweed, lightly tempura battered and topped with guacamole and "RA"ckin' Shrimp; finished with a creamy ginger teriyaki sauce, red beet tempura bits and togarashi ($13). My first impression of this roll was "seriously guacamole on sushi? grossssss" but the drizzle of ginger teriyaki sauce perfectly balances the guacamole and it is really good! I was surprised how good it was and I challenge you to try it!

Also in the “What’s New” section is the Vegetable Tempura Roll: lightly battered asparagus, sweet potato and Japanese eggplant rolled and topped with colorful crunchy tempura bits and drizzled with a sweet eel sauce ($7.50); this is perfect alternative for those people that usually love the California Roll or are allergic to some fish. I tasted it last night and LOVED it!

...and the Tropical Roll: cucumber, mango and avocado rolled and topped with spinach tempura bits, and spicy shrimp mixed with masago and mango salsa ($8.50).
The “RA Tapas” section features two new options: Garlic Sugar Snap Peas ($6.75) and Shishito Peppers ($7) which are both sautéed in an Asian seasoning.
For dessert, guests can indulge in a traditional Japanese treat, the Sweet Mochi Trio. It is a combination of mango, strawberry, and vanilla ice cream wrapped in sweet rice cake, garnished with sliced kiwi and strawberries ($7.50).

In addition to new food selections, RA introduced nine creative new cocktails to the menu, featuring fresh fruit and purées, exotic liqueurs, and premium spirits. A few of the new cocktails are the Elderflower Smash, a flavorful blend of Absolut Berri Acai, St. Germain, muddled blueberries, fresh lemon juice and soda ($8); the Ginger Blossom is a lively concoction of Hendrick’s Gin, St. Germain, muddled strawberries, pink grapefruit and lime juice, and a splash of ginger ale ($8); the Emperor’s Cucumberita is a refreshing combination of Patrón Silver and Patrón Citrónge shaken with fresh lime juice, yuzu sour, and fresh cucumber slices ($8); and the Red Lotus is a tart and tasty martini with Absolut Ruby Red Vodka, X-Rated Fusion Liqueur, and pink grapefruit juice ($9).
Also included in the new drink menu are “pick your poison” mojito and margarita offerings. The Moshi Mojito includes Cruzan Estate Light Rum hand muddled with fresh lime, sugar, soda and fresh mint; choose from lime, blueberry, mango or strawberry flavors ($8). Select from traditional (yuzu), mango, cucumber or strawberry in the Miyagi Margarita featuring Sauza Gold Tequila, mixed with house made yuzu sour, fresh lime juice, and triple sec ($8).
Giving wine lovers more options, several white, red and sparkling wines joined the list, including Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, Conundrum White Blend, Tangley Oaks Merlot, and Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. RA is now offering a Sake Flight ($8) so that guests can sample from the restaurants extensive sake selection. The tasting flight features sweet, dry and sparkling sakes: Kizakura “Pure,” Sho Chiku Bai Nigori “Crème de Sake,” and Kizakura “Pure” Stars.
RA Sushi still offers its popular Happy Hour, Monday through Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m., and a restaurant industry night called Flying Fish Lounge, featuring food specials on Sunday from 8 to 11 p.m. During these special times, a wide variety of sushi, appetizers and tapas range from $2 to $7. The new Garlic Sugar Snap Peas and Shishito Peppers were added to both the Happy Hour and Flying Fish Lounge menus. Also joining the roundup are the Squid Salad, Seaweed Salad, Spicy Salmon Roll, RA Tapas, Rainbow Roll, Tsunami Salmon Roll, and Tuna Tataki. Daily drink specials are still offered and range from $2 to $6.

Being Single Is Not An Excuse To Not Celebrate Valentine's Day This Year

As a single gal myself, Valentine's day is usually that holiday that I just roll my eyes at while I enjoy a bottle of wine. It's not that I am "anti-Valentine's Day", I just think there should be a party for all the single people on this day so we don't have to sit at home and watch those diamond ring commercials where it magically starts to snow and a diamond ring suddenly appears on the snowman (yes, it doesn't make sense and is never realistic). So instead of compiling a list of every restaurant that is doing a fabulous Valentine's dinner with champagne toasts, blah blah blah (which you can find a great list of those on @ATL_Events website), I decided to do something a little different for all my single ladies (and guys) out there. Here is a few things I have found happening in Midtown so that you don't have to sit at home watching diamond commercials:

Spice Market Celebrates Chinese New Year and Welcomes The Year of The Rabbit

Thursday, January 20, 2011 0
ATLANTA (via Atlanta Dish -January 18, 2011) – Spice Market, located inside the W Atlanta-Midtown, is hosting a Chinese New Year celebration to commemorate this important Chinese and Southeast Asian holiday for guests with symbolic food and drink. On Thursday, February 3, the restaurant will offer Chinese New Year-inspired cocktails, a special Bento Box to mark the occasion, and prizes to complete the meal.
At the bar, Tsing Tao beer will be available for $5 per bottle and there will be three different types of complimentary dumplings prepared by Chef Shaun Suter and served all evening long. Two special cocktails will also be offered on Chinese New Year: the Strawberry Firecracker ($8), which contains fresh strawberries, basil, Thai chili, vodka and Cointreau and is garnished with Pop Rocks for a festive twist since firecrackers are an important part of the holiday celebration, and a Mandarin Orange Martini ($7).
In addition to Spice Market’s regular a la carte menu, a special Bento Box will be offered to guests for $30 that evening. The Bento Box includes coconut sticky rice; butternut squash soup; fragrant mushroom egg rolls with galangal emulsion; spicy Shanghai noodles with chilled silken tofu, garlic and herbs; duck curry or wok fried grouper with Napa cabbage, water chestnuts and cucumber; and tangerine sorbet. These items have symbolic meaning in Chinese culture:
· Spring rolls symbolize wealth because their shape is similar to gold bars.
· Noodles represent a long life; an old superstition says that it's bad luck to cut them.
· On New Year’s Eve, it is customary to serve a fish at the end of the evening meal, symbolizing a wish for abundance in the coming year.
· Tangerines and oranges are passed out freely during Chinese New Year as the words for tangerine and orange sound like luck and wealth, respectively.

For a sweet finale to the Chinese New Year celebration, each guest will receive a red fortune cookie (this is a unique twist on the traditional red envelopes that are usually given out for Chinese New Year to symbolize good luck). These fortune cookies will contain discounts for Spice Market such as a free appetizer or dessert, 25% off your entire check, 50% off wine, or buy-one-get-one entrees. These offers will only be valid on a return visit.

Boutique Bargains Warehouse Sale is This Weekend!

Tuesday, January 18, 2011 0
The Boutique Bargains Warehouse Sale is this Friday January 21st and Saturday the 22nd from 10am - 6pm. I went to this last year and trust me, if you don't get there by Friday night then I wouldn't waste your time. I went last year and was one of the first people in line on Friday morning at 10am, and by the time I left at noon there were a couple hundred people shopping leaving many boutiques already looking desolate.
This warehouse sale is amazing. I left with a $120 dress from Fabrik Boutique last year for only $30 as well as a few other $60 tops for only 15 bucks. Trust me, if you get there first thing it is totally worth it!

The Warehouse Sale is located in Atlantic Station above Z Gallerie (the back side). Entrance is off of Market Street. Happy shopping!

Midtown Review: Pasta da Pulcinella

Friday, January 7, 2011 0
I have been dreading writing this post because I am so disapointed. I tried out Pasta da Pulcinella last night after wanting to go there for SOOO long! Pasta da Pulcinella provided some incredible dishes at my "Experience Life on The Midtown Mile" event that was a few months ago. The bruschetta with fresh tomatoes was such a tease that ever since then I have been craving to visit the restaurant. Well last night, I finally got a chance to go over there.
Pasta da Pulcinella is a little ole house that sits in the heart of Midtown Atlanta. You have probably driven past it a few times without even noticing it. A lot of people see Atlanta as this huge city, but Pasta da Pulcinella is one of those places that makes it feel like a small town. It's warm and cozy inside this small house and you almost forget that you are surrounded by skyscrapers outside.

I ordered the special which was the cheese tortellini with chicken in a tomato basil sauce and thinking that it was a pretty simple dish, I figured I couldn't go wrong... WRONG. First off, the chicken was wayyy overcooked. It was rough, hard to chew, and verryyy dry. So dry, I almost wondered if it had been sitting out for a day or so. The tortellini tasted like they had cooked it that morning and sat it in the fridge all day and when someone ordered it they took it out and covered it with the hot tomato sauce. The tortellini was not soft at all, there is no way they could have cooked it fresh to my order. I will say that the tomato sauce was incredible and filled with lots of flavor. The sauce was so amazing that it managed to make me forgive Pasta da Pulcinella for the tortellini and chicken I was eating. I managed to eat the tortellini but ended up leaving most of the chicken on my plate since that was just wayyyy to dry to even attempt. Finally, I ordered the Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee for my dessert which was really good and made a nice closing to the otherwise forgettable meal.

I hate writing all this because I have heard soo many incredible things about this restaurant (even though a lot of my followers informed me Pasta da Pulcinella has recently gone downhill). I feel bad, I wanted to love this place so much but I just can't (insert sad face here).
