Midtown Review: Bakeshop

Friday, January 29, 2010 0

Yes, there is no other way to begin this review other than saying the Bakeshop is out of control! The Bakeshop is located on the Midtown Mile on the corner of Peachtree St. and 8th Street. You walk in and immediately notice the incredible design inside. It is essentially one large room, completely open to the kitchen where the bread is freshly baked daily. The Bakeshop has a comforting feeling about it where strangers become friends as the sitting arrangements are long wooden style tables that stretch from one side of the restaurant to the other. There are no individual tables, but instead everyone sits next and across from each other on a couple long "picnic" style hightops. Freshly baked breads, croussaints, muffins, bagels, danishes, cookies and scones line the counter as you contemplate which one to order first. They have a chocolate almond croissant that is to die for. I am drooling just thinking about it! I went there for lunch with my dad and ordered the grilled cheese with brie cheese on challah bread and there smoked tomato soup as a side. I am a fairly picky eater so getting a grilled cheese with brie on it was rather scary at first since it was a stretch from my traditional american style grilled cheese. But the brie grilled cheese was incredible and left me wondering how I had never had a grilled cheese with brie before! The smoked tomato soup was refreshing and comforting, and was a perfect compliment to the sandwich. My dad ordered the Roasted Turkey sandwich. This sandwich comes with avocado, romaine, tomatoes, turkey, and bacon on toasted country sourdough. The picture above of the giant sandwich is only HALF of the sandwich! Ridiculous right?!? Plenty for leftovers and was ohh so good! We then ordered one of their double chocolate chip cookies for dessert which, as you can guess, was huge as well. This place far exceeded my expectations and is dangerously delicious! The prices were all under $10 with the largest portions. To the employees- great work and welcome to the neighborhood! Thank you so much for providing a great place to not only enjoy your delicious treats (which I can tell you have put a ton of work into), but also for such a great ambiance and of course, for your welcoming smiles. So if you see me, and I've gained weight, at least you'll know why ;) ... I won't be able to stay away from this place! This is definitely a great lunch that you must pencil into your schedule to try!

Midtown Review: Twisted Taco

Friday, January 15, 2010 0

I have been to the Twisted Taco in Roswell and have loved it. Great food, great atmosphere, great service, pretty much have never had any complaints. So today for lunch some coworkers and I decided to go to Twisted Taco in Midtown for lunch. This location is much smaller than the Roswell or Kennesaw location but has a great city feel to it! We were seated in this back room. It felt awkward sitting here because there were only 3 tables bunched together next to some arcade games. I honestly could have turned and started a conversation with the table right next to us. Our waitress must have been serving the whole restaurant because she was very busy; always running around and making quick orders which made me feel extremely rushed. We ordered some chips and salsa for the table (which you have to pay for... it isnt complementary like other restaurants) but it was a combination plate of 3 different salsas and chips and was pretty good. I then ordered some queso dip for myself but when it came it was soo cold. Seriously it was so cold I wondered how the cheese could still be a liquid! So I asked if they could heat it up. When it came back it was scolding hot and bubbling. Well I guess I got what I asked for, but it would have been nice if they could have found a medium in between the two temperatures. I personally ordered for my meal a regular chicken and cheese taco with NOTHING else on it. That's it! You would think that would be simple. When it came it was cheese and chicken and this spicy sauce that they drenched the taco in. It was gross, and I barely ate any of it. I didn't even take a picture of it because it looked like taco soup because there was so much spicy sauce. My coworkers meal looked really good so I took a picture of his. It looks like they give a pretty generous portion of guacamole and sour cream with the salad. He said that salad had way too much dressing on it but was wonderful and would definitely order it again. We arrived at Twisted Taco at 12:30 for lunch and didn't pay our check till 1:45. The food took FOREVER to make. I would have thought being located in the center of a city they would have a faster lunch for business people (like me) who only have a certain amount of time to eat. But no, our meal took one hour and 15 minutes! I'm hoping that my experience with Twisted Taco in Midtown was just a coincedence and that this really doesn't happen to everyone that comes through their door!

Midtown Highlight: Rira Irish Pub

Thursday, January 14, 2010 1

Each week I will be highlighting a Midtown restaurant in the area that I feel my followers would like to know more about. I will ask the questions that my followers would like me to ask and hold an interview with the manager at each Midtown restaurant.

This week I have chosen Rira Irish Pub on Crescent St. as the Midtown highlight of the week! I interviewed Spencer, the manager, as well as a couple waitresses about their experience in Atlanta and working at Rira!

1) How would you describe the food that Rira Irish Pub serves?
::: "Traditional Irish Fare coupled with American bar classics."

2) What is one interesting characteristic about Rira Irish Pub that sets it apart from other restaurants in Midtown?
:::"Authenticity. Everything in the restaurant has been dismantled from shipyards in Ireland. Everything has a story behind it." (More on this below)

3) @GoKTGo Question : Are all your employees brought over from Ireland?
:::"About half of our employees came over from Ireland. They are here on a 12 month Visa.

4) @GoKTGo Question : Do they bring employees over from Ireland for all the Rira's in America or just the Atlanta location?
:::"Yes, they bring them over for all the locations in America."

5) How did you select the employees to bring over to the Atlanta Rira?
:::" We recruit people in Ireland, hold interviews, place ads in local newspapers, and eventually offer the ones we have selected the job!"

6) I then asked one of the servers from Ireland, James, about how he has adjusted to the American lifestyle.
:::"It was a pretty easy adjustment. Being away from my family has been hard though. Christmas was also interesting here in America. Back in Ireland, everything is closed for a whole week surrounding Christmas. Here in America, everything is just closed on Christmas day. That definitely took a lot of adjusting too."

7) What is your favorite beer that you serve and why?
::: "Guinness. We have the perfect pint. We take the production and service of our Guinness very seriously. We do a traditional 2 part pour. We put a lot of money into the care of the beer. We always make sure it is served at the correct temperature. We even do a training of our staff on how to pour the perfect Guinness for our guests."

8) What is your most popular item on the menu?
::: "Fish and chips. Our food is made from scratch, nothing is ever frozen. The fish and chips is very popular because it is made with fresh cod. "

9) Tell me more about the structure and design of your restaurant.
:::"Our floors come from the same shipyard where the Titanic was built in Belfast. The bar comes from salvage yards and old churches in the 1900's. Our front doors came from a clothing shop in Dublin. These doors are 250 years old. Our bookshelves are also over 100 years old. Everything in Rira has a story behind it. We also merge the American and Irish culture in Rira. We have pictures of people of Irish decent in Atlanta like Margaret Mitchell whose family came from over to America from Ireland. Our back Harbor Bar is from a Shop Bar in Ireland. See in Ireland, shops were people buy their necessities are often attached to a bar. So while they are there shopping, they can have a pint as well. Our Harbor bar is part of one of these half and half shop bars in Port Stewart, Ireland."

10) How did you (Spencer) become the manager of the Atlanta Rira Irish Pub?
:::" I have been working for Rira for 10 years. I worked at Rira through college and evenually began to open up some of the restaurants in other parts of the country."

11) Are Ireland natives offended by the "Irish Car Bomb" drink?
::: "Haha, I personally do not take offense to it but back in Ireland many of the older generations finds the saying extremely offensive."

12) What has impressed you about America?
:::"The people here are so wonderful. They are so nice and have impressed me."

13)We love Irish pubs here in America. Is American food as popular in Ireland?
:::"Yes, we have a bunch of American diners in Ireland and they all have jukeboxes in them. We have an Eddie Rockets in Ireland which is similar to the Johnny Rockets here in America. It is always crowded and attracts a lot of families. In the big cities there are a lot of American diners like TGIFridays. We also have a big diner chain in Ireland called Captain America. They are pretty popular."

14) @DatealiciousATL Question -Will you be having any viewing parties for the World Cup?
:::"We have had all the World Cup qualifiers on our televisions and will continue to show all the World Cup games."

15) I then asked one of the waitresses: What is your best experience in Atlanta?
:::"We have gone to see the Hawks, Thrashers, Falcons, Braves, and even the U2 Concert. My favorite experience was the Lady Gaga concert at the Fox Theatre and we actually got to meet her!"

16) If you had to pick one other Midtown restaurant that you enjoy what would it be and why?
:::"Definitely the Vortex. They are awesome! They have great food, great beer lise, and no nonsense. The Vortex would definitely be our sister restaurant in Midtown."

17) Weekly specials at Rira Irish Pub?
:::"Happy hour is everyday from 4-7pm. We have $4 Harp and Yuengling and also our signature drink called 12th and Crescent."

18) Weekly events or entertainment?
:::"Yes, every Tuesday night we have our Pub Quiz. We also have live music Wednesday and Thursday night. We have live bands as well on the weekends.

19) @AGirlNamedSEW Question - What are your vegetarian options on the menu?
:::"I am actually a vegetarian myself. We do have a veggie burger even though it is not listed on the menu. You can also turn in burger that is on the menu into a veggie burger. My favorite thing to do is put a veggie burger inside the reuben sandwich. We also have hummus wraps and nachos without the meat."

20) I then asked one of the waitresses was has been one thing that is drastically different in America than in Ireland?
:::"Apartments! It is so weird that you have to furnish apartments here in Atlanta. Back in Ireland, if you were apartment searching everything would be furnished. It would be crazy to rent an apartment if they didn't already provide you a bed. It is so weird here that you look for apartments and the rooms are empty. Furniture is expensive!"

Midtown Review: Dressed "Salads With Style"

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 1

I always crave salads but have always had a hard time finding a great salad that is quick and easy. I always end up going through a drive thru joint with the intentions of ordering one of their salads... but as soon as I get up to order, I smell that fried goodness and always end up ordering something completely unhealthy for myself. So when I heard of Dressed in Midtown, I thought that it was a great idea. The delivery of healthy salads! Of course, you can eat inside at their location, but I chose to have it delivered for lunch. To begin with, delivery orders must be at least $10 which kinda stinks when one of their salads is around $7-$9. So I decided to order two (since I had a coupon) and decided I would just eat the second one tomorrow. If you take a look at their online delivery menu (http://www.dressedsalads.com/delivery.asp) you can see the array of choices they have to offer for your salad. Five different kinds of greens to choose from, 55 toppings to choose from (you get to pick 4 toppings per salad; any additional is 50 cents), 12 different types of meat (these are additional $ as well), and 24 different dressings to top off your self-built salad. The toppings include an array of items such as crispy chinese noodles, mandarin oranges, dried cherries, sliced almonds, grilled asparagus, sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and many, many more. The variety of meat options include grilled chicken, cajun chicken, grilled steak, ham, salami, turkey, tofu, egg whites, and thick cute bacon. And finally the dressings range from a delicious blueberry pomegranate vinaigrette to a dijon wasabi ginger vinaigrette and everything in between!

So after reading carefully over all the options, I decided on my salad. Baby spinach with raisens, dried cherries, grapes, and sliced almonds with the blueberry pomegranate vinaigrette dressing on the side. I called and placed my order around noon hoping that the salad would arrive within 30 minutes (it is of course delivery for a reason), but the salad did not arrive until almost an hour later which disappointed me. I became "too hungry" for a salad. Weird I know, but sometimes I just get so hungry that I want a big, juicy cheeseburger instead. So finally, after waiting the salad was finally delivered. The delivery man was very nice and welcoming. I received my salad and rushed to the kitchen because I was STARVING. But luckily this salad wasn't the kind where you receive a boat full of lettuce with a few toppings sprinkled on top. No, this salad was heavy and full of toppings. So many toppings that I ultimately ate all the lettuce and had plenty of toppings left in the bottom (you never see that happen). The salad was wonderful and fresh and the fruits were the perfect compliment.

The only downside to Dressed were the pricy salads. Yes I know that $8 isn't that much but when my salad only contains lettuce, raisens, cherries, and grapes it can be kind of pricy to order often. I also didn't like how long it took to deliver the salad. I usually order delivery because (1) I dont have time to drive to a restaurant and (2) I like the convenience of having it delivered to my door. I could have probably driven to Dressed, eaten in the restaurant, and driven back to work by the time the delivery guy showed up at my door with the salad.

But overall, I truly enjoyed the salad from Dressed and would order from them again. The salad was wonderful and delicious. You can't really see the toppings in the picture because they are all sitting in the bottom because there are so many that its so heavy. It is also is sized enough for 2 meals. But mine was so delicious I couldnt stop eating it (which rarely happens for me with a salad.)

Dressed has 3 locations in the Atlanta area; Midtown, Buckhead and Perimeter. I have also attached the coupon for $2 off Dressed which is good through 1/31/2010. Feel free to use it and let me know how your Dressed experience was!

You can see their full menu and contact information on their website at http://www.dressedsalads.com/
