Proceeds To Benefit the Orchestra And Its Education and Community Engagement Programs

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will host its second annual Symphony Gala on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta. The evening will include a performance by Tony Award-winner Bernadette Peters with members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Proceeds will benefit the Orchestra and its Education and Community Engagement programs.

Patron guests will begin their evening at 6:00 p.m. with a pre-concert cocktail reception in the Stent Atrium at the High Museum of Art. At 7:30 p.m., Ms. Peters — who recently appeared in the Broadway revival of Follies, and will guest-star on the new mid-season NBC Broadway drama, Smash — will perform with members of the Orchestra in Atlanta Symphony Hall.

Following the concert, patron guests will enjoy a seated dinner, catered by Legendary Partners, in the Taylor Lobby of the High Museum of Art. Throughout the evening, patrons will have the opportunity to bid on luxury items — including jewelry, roundtrip tickets on Delta Air Lines, and a fabulous international travel package — at a live auction.

After dinner, patron guests will enjoy an after party — featuring cocktails, coffee and desserts, music provided by Atlanta Party Band, and dancing — in the Stent Atrium. Tickets to the Symphony Gala after-party will be available to young professionals (ages 25-40) for $45.

The evening's attire is Black Tie.

Proceeds from the 2011 Symphony Gala will benefit the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and its Education and Community Engagement Programs, which include initiatives such as the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and Talent Development Program, as well as support partnerships with local community institutions and create a wide variety of musical and educational experiences for citizens of all ages.

COBBIE’S SAUCE FUNDRAISER FOR SHEPHERD CENTER ON JANUARY 19

On Thursday, January 19, 2012, JCT. Bar is hosting an event with Betty and Billy Hulse, the makers of Cobbie’s Sauce, to raise funds for the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, which is a private non-profit hospital specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injuries.

Throughout the evening, JCT. Bar will be serving pork sliders with Cobbie’s Sauce (three sliders for $9), and all the proceeds from the sales of this dish will be donated to Shepherd Center.

Cobbie’s Sauce is an all natural, gluten free sauce that was originally created by Mary Cobb “Cobbie” Hulse, Billy Hulse’s mother, more than 60 years ago. This recipe has been used on chicken, pork, beef, fish and shrimp ever since.

The Shepherd Center holds a special place in the hearts of the Hulses; Billy Hulse sustained a spinal cord injury in 2009 and received great care and treatment from the dedicated team at the Shepherd Center. The Hulses share proceeds from Cobbie’s Sauce with this hospital that continues to give the family hope for the future.

Last night I ventured over to Briza, a new restaurant in Midtown that I have been wanting to try for a while. Now I'll be honest, I am normally not the "fancy schmancy" diner. But every once in a while, I like to treat myself (and my mom in this case) and try out a delicately prepared meal that is well worth every penny. Briza will now be my go-to place for these exquisite meals. We tasted a bunch of their fabulous dishes and even though all of them were mouth-watering delicious (see pictures below), I specifically fell in love with one. Before I spill the beans on which dish it was, I'll give you a little background story.... I hate fish.
I never have really enjoyed eating any fish dish. Maybe I am just not a fan or maybe I have never been anywhere where it has been prepared to perfection, but when I look at a menu at a restaurant I can promise you my eyes quickly move over the fish dish and it is never considered. Last night I received the tasting menu and the first thing I said to my mom was "everything looks amazing, except the halibut... guess you will be eating my dish as well as yours on that one." Of course my moms normal response was "just give it a try, you never know." After some amazing starter dishes, the halibut finally came into my presence. The smell of the fresh corn and taragon was first of all overwhelming and already gave me a little "mental" tease of what this dish may taste like. The following events all transpired very quickly because before I knew it there wasn't any halibut left on my plate. What just happened? My mom stared in disbelief as I pretty much inhaled this dish. It was the most crave-able dish that I have had in a long time. Seriously... it was so amazing and cooked to perfection that my mouth is watering right now (at 8:30am) for it. Who knew I would ever be craving halibut, even for breakfast! Embarrassingly, I even waved goodbye to my empty plate (with a sad face) and told it I would be back for more. It was that good.
The rest of the meal was nothing short of exceptional and exceeded my expectations.

Cucumber Compressed Melon Salad

Duck confit roll, foie gras, peach marmalade

Veal sweetbread parmesan, basil, garlic chips

Old fashioned donut, bacon powder, chocolate, coffee ice cream

The actual meal portions are a lot larger so don't be fooled by the pictures. We only tasted these items so the servings were a lot smaller. If you check out Briza (which I highly suggest) please let me know what you think, even though I am sure I already know what you will say!

Midtown Review: Top Flr

Do I even need to write a review about Top Flr? The talk around town about this place has been incredible from the beginning and my experience far exceeded my expectations. This little hidden gem in Midtown even has some killer mixologists that create the most exquisite cocktail creations in town. The menu is also far from disappointing with amazing dishes such as White Bean Hummus with Flat Bread, Olives, Capers and Chili Oil, Tuna Tartar on Sardinian Flat Bread with Thai Miso Pesto, Avocado and Lime Aioli, or their Duck Confit Pizza with Applewood Bacon, Grilled Portobello Mushroom and Pesto. Every dish is delicious and prepared to perfection.
The first Wednesday of every month is our Midtown Supper Club where a group of us get together and try out a new restaurant in the city that we haven't explored yet. I highly suggest starting a Supper Club with your friends, it is a wonderful way to spend time with great people and explore the city as well. This month we decided to try Top Flr since we have heard nothing less than exciting chatter in the city about this place. We all ordered different dishes and shared them among the table. I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves because a simple "review" of their food wouldn't do it justice.

Ken Block and Drew Copeland from Sister Hazel
Ken Block is a songwriter, acoustic guitarist and lead singer of the rock band Sister Hazel, known for a powerful and emotional voice that is both unique and quickly recognizable. Block is a critically acclaimed performer and songwriter who has written or co-written several Billboard-charting songs. Drew Copeland plays rhythm and acoustic guitar. He sings lead and background vocals for the band Sister Hazel; he co-wrote many of the group's songs. Get ready for an enjoyable evening of original tunes you’ll recognize and some of Ken and Drew’s favorites.

Ponderosaculls their sound from soulful, southern roots, while citing influences from The Rolling Stones and The Faces to The Black Crowes and Tom Petty. Ponderosa’s debut album Moonlight Revival due out January 18, 2011 on New West Records was produced by Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, My Morning Jacket) at Blackbird Studio in Nashville, TN and mixed by Russ Fowler (John Mayer, Stone Temple Pilots). The 11-track record features numerous stand out rockers showcasing lead singer/songwriter Kalen Nash’s throaty, blues-tinged wail, including the record’s first single “Old Gin Road” which Songs Illinois declares “...shows the band’s soul-rock side.” Ponderosa will deliver a solid mix of rock and soul at River Revival.

The Kicks Nashville knockouts with class, gods of harmony, humans with soul, this four piece band is eclectic, electric, and will rock and roll you for days. Go ahead and slap a MySpace tag on them like rock/indie/alternative. They'll only peel it off and reinvent the genre. With influences from Paul McCartney and Rod Stewart to Pete Yorn and Tom Petty, The Kicks are salted with the South but still pop like soda … and they will rock the remainder of the evening until we’re forced to end. And not because we want to.

River Rock Star Award

: The River Rock Star Award is presented to a company, group, or individual that has used their creative gifts or innovative methods to benefit the Chattahoochee River. This year we are delighted to honor Rhett Turner and Jonatham Wickhamfor their hour-long documentary released in 2010, Chattahoochee: Water War to Water Vision, which has brought much needed attention to the plight of our river and the complexities surrounding the Tri-State Water War

Save the Hoooch Campaign: River Revival is also the kick-off party for SweetWater Brewery’s Save the Hooch Campaign, which engages beer drinkers, bar patrons, and restaurants throughout metro Atlanta in efforts to raise awareness and funds to support UCR’s river patrol and water quality monitoring programs.
River Revival is organized with the help of an active Host Committee.
